  1. Hey Gilbert Jacob here man from the U.K, I thought i would drop a line tell you what been happening over here, see what you think , well after so many years of reading and obsessing over getting it and be free of all this suffering , and haveing had no live contact with any trust worthy dudes who have understood all this nisagadatta stuff, i ended up at one of Tim Freaks mystery weekend retreats with about 30 other people. did nt have a clue what to expect , given up on enlightenment , definatley wanted an insight into my true nature. Tims been sharing his expression of this for over 30 years now so theres no bullshit in his way , and he s desighned these weekends so to leave you with the experiance of something who knows what. we done an exercise where we looked into each others eyes i was looking into Tims when this happened for me, the idea of it is to sence that being prensence that cant be seen in anouther and what happened for me was the story or image of jacob disappeared and all that was there was tims face and a peacefulness, There was a lightness when i left there to come home and now back home life has taken hold and this has fallen away and life seems as if before i went. just wanted to ask that was a pretty authentic place to go i thought to see through this story , is it that this needs to be seen a lot before the habitual story losses its grip and the natural state becomes natural to see, cheers man

    • Whatever comes and goes CANNOT be what you are. You are here, now. Drop all stories and see if you can find anything wrong with right here right now, without labels and stories about ‘me’. If you want a practice…..then try that….as often as you can.

  2. I see myself as a newbie Asking everytime when will i “get it”?
and more important that what you say and many others..is it really, really true what you say? Is there a seeing, knowing. Is it something you “think” it is so.
There is nothing you or i can do to prove if you do this then you will get it.
There is nothing to do just watch…well if i do that in the morning then i will be sitting here at the end of the day nothing happens. The telephone is ringing and say and said..Hey Henk are you coming today or not. And then i say no i am waiting to “get it”. The next day i will go to my work and think ..well someday it will come
I eat my soup and then when i bring my spoon to my mouth ..just before i take a
sip then suddenly …yes i get it. this is it as they say a moment of grace !!

..but that is just a story..life goes on and on..waiting..waiting..for what ??

    • You ask is there seeing-knowing? How could you even contemplate such a question without seeing and/or knowing? Be simple. The mind is time and the mind is waiting. You are already here, now. You are NOT the mind. Simple. Be simple.

  3. Be cautious of those who design workshops to leave you with an experience. ALL experiences come and go. Whatever experience you seemingly acquire will disappear. Experiencing is uninterrupted….it is with you right NOW and that is the only value that any experience has. NOW. The mind is time and the mind disappears as the immediacy comes to the fore. The mind interprets the experiencing into experiences for an entity and the entity is a fiction.

  4. Gilbert is dead-on with the whole ‘experience’ thing. I’ve done a TON of ‘spiritual’ events and activities and had many fascinating ‘experiences’ which leave me exactly where I started – with ‘me.’

What feels authentic, however, is the occasional ‘insight,’ which almost seems to pop up or ‘appear’ while a thousand other thoughts are rambling away. These little insights are almost striking in the way they instantly stand out, they are instantaneous, and the mind immediately starts chasing after them like hounds to the fox. In other words, they aren’t experiences I can relive or recapture – it’s almost more like something peeking out for the briefest of moments.

The big experiences, the ones that leave me feeling emotional or cathartic and now recognized for what they are: just more mind stuff. My $.02.

  5. It seems that the predominant theme for many is the experience, while That by which the experience is seen/recognized/noticed goes unnoticed, or at least unrecognized.

  6. I sometimes make a mess of clear thinking when trying to write it down Here goes: Sometimes the non dual message comes across as granting immunity to suffering. Is non duality just another belief to get through life with the least hurt. Like the promises of heaven, enlightenment, therapy, drugs high, or nihilism (which I only know about through The Big Lebowsky). And my all time favorite: The Law of Attraction.

I SEE non duality as the end of the search. I am experienceING what is discussed in non duality. Though my ‘life circumstances’ have deteriorated in the worldly view, I am mostly suffer-free. As a matter of fact I’ve never been happier. But there lingers the ‘don’t be fooled again’ when I draw back into the involvement with the appearance of things. Am I a chump to be happy with how the universe presents itself in the appearance? Do we actually have control to attract a better outcome in the appearance. ( I wondered if this was what you were addressing in your interview with Never Not There when you told the parable of the man who wished for water, a fan, etc. and ended up with the devil)

When people say they use attraction to manifest what they want I mostly think they are narrowing down the universe to their trite wishes. Why not let the universe show up as Magnificent Unfathomable? Why would you want the village idiot running the world? But still I must ask: Can patterns be manipulated to create a better experiencing. Just for the heck of it.

I may clarify this doubt after your answer. Thank you for your writings.
    .

    • “The Secret” is a very popular DVD because it serves the erroneous belief in ‘me’. “I am in control” is a fixation that many appear to suffer from.
If there is a Law of Attraction it must be balanced by an equal opposite Law of Repulsion. So you come back to where you start. Right here, right now! It is all mind stuff…..sometimes it appears to work and sometimes not. The wish list is an unstable field of concepts and one that is shifting about according to new input. It doesn’t work.
Patterns appear to be manipulated (That is the manifestation – appearance) but a little clear observation reveals that the activity is spontaneously happening before the concept of ‘me’.
Seeing is the essence of all insights. Seeing is happening. ‘You’ as a believed in entity are NOT ‘doing’ the seeing. Such ‘pointing out’ is not popular. Who wants to give up belief in ‘me’? It happens spontaneously only when it is seen for what it is. Resistance to such insight is due to belief in ‘me’. 99% of the population ‘suffer’ due to that belief. Only a few appear to be willing to investigate what is truly going on.

  7. You are dead right, when there are no stories playing in the head there is no possiblilty for there to be anything wrong. I can see that only in thought can there be something ‘right or wrong’, these judgements are not inherent in the ‘world’ itself.

My question is what do to about the ‘mind’ though. In my experience when thought has a problem with something it will keep coming up until it’s resolved. You say to “drop all stories” but as I see it the mind will keep bringing these stories up and see them as a problem until it’s seen they are not. Can a continual dropping of the stories wear them out so to speak?

    Thanks, Dan.

    • Nothing can exist without energy. If the belief in something that is not real is removed, then its transparency is obvious or it just doesn’t appear at all, anymore. Belief in something that is ‘real’ does not affect the real. The real IS. The believed is not real. If it were real it would not need belief to support it…..’it’ would simply be real…..undeniable.

  8. “Drop all stories and see if you can find anything wrong with right here right now, without labels and stories about ‘me’. If you want a practice…..then try that….as often as you can.”

  9. Doesn’t the body experience, feel this presence awarness as love or a well being, G you say when you look into someones eyes the mask squirms, the feeling im sqiurming the awkwardness the wanting to lookaway disingage eye contact, what is all that becouse in acuality is the mask actually pure open space.

    • The body does not know anything – it is dead to the ‘knowing’. You are the one who experiences the bidy and you say this is ‘my body’. The so-called mask is a ‘label’ or a ‘concept’ appearing on the natural spaciousness – or pure consciousness. If you believe you are the mask, or the voice in the head, the clear witnessing is compromised.

  10. Beautifully expressed, Gilbert.

  11. I have always held the view that awareness of being was not dependent on circumstance or method. Nisargadatta expressed this as “Your own self is your ultimate teacher. The outer teacher (guru) is merely a milestone. It is only your inner teacher that will walk with you to the goal, for it is the goal.” – Still I wonder about those whose view has been changed seemingly by personally spending time with an enlightened one. Sailor Bob was not content to just hear about Nisargadatta, he went and spent time with him. Gilbert the same with Sailor Bob as well as others with him. Obviously not everyone who meets an enlightened one becomes enlightened and yet for some being in their presence appears to be the catalyst that affects a change in view. Perhaps it is just appearance of relationship where there is none. Perhaps when a change happens it just happens and the circumstances are irrelevant.

  12. Gilbert, Invoke here from Brisbane. My issue is with identity. While I see clearly there is no doer/thinker some seem to want to still identify with the limitless saying your true nature is this. I cannot come to terms with this as I feel any identity is dual and a distraction that seems to engage more thought. I like Leo Hartongs use of the word IT. So how can this knowing that notices everything be identified with when it is in fact nothing?

    • IT as you like to call it is self-aware. IT does not need anything outside of itself to know and IT is all inclusive. Everything registers upon THAT and IS THAT. This ‘news’ robs the believed in entity of any ground to stand on. That is why this direct pointing is not popular. You will not hear of this ‘news’ from popular teachers unless they have ‘heard about it’ and they use it to add to their ‘story’ of being personally enlightened. Who cares?

  13. If the characters in the play of life are You celebrating Yourself. Is not that already awakeness? How can there be awakening when You are all that?

  14. The space where you are seeing from , can you say more about that G if anything,

    • What is the first thing you see? SPACE.
The eye is appearing in space. The eye cannot see the eye.
Just behind the eye somewhere, there should be a ‘seer’ looking through the eye, no? Have a look. The mind will form a ‘witness’ and that is the mind translating the seeing into the idea of a seer. It is a concept. Obvious. Yes it is radical and apparently threatening, because an idea has no substance you can touch or even find. So where are you seeing from?
Keep investigating and keep dropping the reference point (witness) and notice that as soon as you notice it, the reference point is being seen from beyond it. The mind translates this ‘new seeing’ into another reference point and so on. Keep investigating until it is clearly obvious that you are not any of these concepts about a ‘witness’. Then it may dawn naturally upon you, as a natural recognition, that what you are is just like space or even prior to space. Space is a perception….as distance and volume. Identified consciousness is dull and mechanical. Be conscious of consciousness and things change very vividly.

These points are not to be found is some satsang. All the popular Satsang teachers keep the seekers trapped by feeding them concepts about ‘becoming’. They offer hope to a fictional ‘me’. Useless.

  15. I like this :”Just behind the eye somewhere, there should be a ‘seer’ looking through the eye, no?”
Yes and then we can take a photography of the seer.

  16. Thanks for this insightful blog Gilbert.
I came into advaita a few years ago, I have read a lot from different people and some times it seems to me contradictory and confusing, there is so much material over the Internet. A few weeks ago I found Sailor Bob and too me he is the one that makes the most sense in the simplest form….although some times it’s hard to understand him because I am not used his accent and English is not my first language. My question to you is, does it makes a difference to be in the presence of some one who is awake, or simply by reading his books and listen to the talks would do it? Is it faster in the presence of some one, I ask this because I keep reading that this fellow awoke in the presence of Nisargadatta or Ramana Maharishi, or whoever, should I go to Australia an meet Bob personally? Or is not necessary. It’s important for me, all do whatever it takes to wake up from this duality. Truthfully Andrei

    • Do not worry. Everything resolves itself naturally. You will be moved to do whatever is necessary. No judgement, no blame. If Bob’s accent is difficult, read his books. There are hundreds of ways to advise another and there are no general rules. The easy path is sometimes not the correct path. No path at all is best. Most advice ‘out there’ implies an entity with the capacity of choosing or doing. Choices happens spontaneously. The story of me is a story. Relax and see how the river flows.

  17. Thanks Guru G

  18. Hey Andrei, I’ve also had the same questions over the years, I’ve read hundereds of books and been very obsessed with it all, wishing Bob and Gilbert were next door neighbours. Being poor and unable to go and see anyone, there’s a book that is simple, clear and if you relax into it it’s all there for anyone to find. Bob’s book, “Whats wrong with right now unless you think about it?” – one of the most beautiful expressions of this around today. What I’ve noticed is that with a relaxed mind and the obsessive search eased off and just quietly taking in what this book points out is all thats really needed.

    • Yes Bob’s book is complete. It is all in that book. By the way, Nathan Gill gave the book a plug on one of his short videos recently. Get the book and relax into it.
